What to Expect on Your First Day of a Tiling Course

Starting something new always brings a few nerves, and that is completely normal. Most of our students arrive on their first morning not quite knowing what to expect, and most of them leave that evening surprised by how much they have already covered.

You Do Not Need Any Experience

This is worth saying up front because it is one of the most common worries people bring through the door. You do not need to have tiled before, held a trowel before, or done any kind of trade work before. Our courses start from the very beginning, and your instructor will not assume any prior knowledge.

People who come to us arrive from all sorts of backgrounds. Office workers, drivers, retail staff, people who have been in other trades for years and want to add tiling to their skillset. The one thing they have in common is that they are ready to learn, and that is all you need to bring.

What Happens When You Arrive

You will be welcomed into our purpose-built training centre, which has been designed specifically for tiling training rather than adapted from something else. Everything in the centre is there for a reason, and you will be using most of it before the week is out.

The first part of the morning covers the theory side of tiling. Understanding what you are doing and why is just as important as the practical work. You will learn about substrates and why preparation matters so much, about different types of adhesive and when to use them, about setting out a job correctly before a single tile goes up. Getting this foundation right makes everything that follows much easier.

Getting Hands On

You will not spend long on theory before you are into practical work, because that is what an intensive course is built around. By the time you break for lunch on your first day, you will have had your hands on tiles, adhesive and tools.

Your instructor will demonstrate a technique, explain what to look for and why, and then you will practice it. This is repeated throughout the day across different skills and scenarios. You are not just watching, you are doing, and you are doing it repeatedly until it starts to feel natural.

Some things will feel awkward at first. Spreading adhesive evenly, getting tiles level, making accurate cuts. That is completely expected. The whole point of being in a training environment is that you can make mistakes, ask questions and try again without it costing you anything other than a bit of time.

Your Instructor

Your training will be led by Henry, who owns Expert Tiling Courses UK and has over a decade of real world tiling experience behind him.

The class sizes at Expert Tiling Courses UK are deliberately kept small. This means you get proper attention and feedback throughout the day rather than being one of many students trying to get a few minutes with an instructor.

If something does not make sense, ask. If you want to repeat a technique, say so. The course is structured, but it is not rigid, and your progress matters more than sticking to a timetable for its own sake.

What You Will Cover on Day One

While every course has its own structure, the first day typically covers the fundamentals that everything else builds on. You can expect to work on:

  • Understanding the different types of substrate and how to prepare them
  • Mixing and applying tile adhesive correctly
  • Fixing wall tiles and getting them level and plumb
  • Basic cutting to fit tiles around edges and obstacles

By the end of the day you will have a working understanding of the core principles and some real practical experience to go with it. It is a full day, and most students arrive home genuinely tired but equally pleased with how much ground they have covered.

What to Bring

Wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty. Adhesive and grout have a way of ending up everywhere when you are learning, and that is fine. Comfortable footwear with good ankle support is sensible given you will be on your feet all day.

Lunch is your own to sort, and there are options locally. A notebook is useful if you like to write things down, though you will also receive course materials to take away with you.

The Atmosphere

Training with us is practical and focused, but it is not a stressful environment. People come here from all kinds of backgrounds, often having never done anything like this before, and the atmosphere reflects that. There is no pressure to be perfect from the start. Tiling is a skill, and skills take practice to develop.

What students consistently say after their first day is that they wish they had done it sooner. The combination of clear instruction, hands-on practice and a well-designed training environment makes a bigger difference than most people expect.
